Hold The Polling Firms and News Organizations AccountableBy John McIntyre |
| October 26, 2000 In these next 12 days, remember which polls correctly called this race and which networks honestly portrayed what was actually happening. These last few days have seen the drumbeat from ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, The Washington Post and The New York Times flood the nation with the "Gore momentum" story, backed up by their own polls. However, despite the talking heads at the major networks and the polls they pay for, the majority of evidence continues to point to major troubles for Vice President Gore. To find out the truth about this race, all you have to do is look where the two candidates are campaigning and spending money. We don't see Bush and Gore stumping for votes in Colorado, Kentucky, North Carolina and Ohio. What we see - what the "media elite" can't hide - is Bush and Gore in Wisconsin, Illinois, Tennessee, Washington, Oregon, West Virginia, California and Florida. NBC Nightly News began their broadcast Wednesday with the question, "Why are Bush and Gore fighting for states they should have locked up a long time ago?" The facts are that Al Gore is struggling to hold on to almost his entire base (WA, OR, WV, IA, MN, DE, ME, IL, CA) and Bush is struggling in only ONE base state, Florida. Gore trails in the latest polls in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Maine, West Virginia, Tennessee, Oregon and Iowa - all states he should have locked away by now. Bush has over 200 solid electoral votes, and the most recent credible polls coming out of Florida seem to indicate Bush slowly pulling ahead. Gore isn't just losing the electoral college battle, he is getting killed. The problem for Al Gore is simple, less than two weeks before election day he is polling at or below 45% in almost every one of the close battleground states. Any objective political analyst would acknowledge that this is an incredibly bad sign for a two-term incumbent Vice-President. The media can continue to spin all they want, but until Gore gets his state numbers up over 45% in some of the states he absolutely must win, he is heading for a serious electoral defeat. At this stage in the game, leading in California, Illinois and Maryland is not going to get the job done for the Vice President. The writing is on the wall, but the media doesn't want to read it to the American people. One of the greatest indicators of Gore's problems is that we are starting to hear an awful lot about Ralph Nader all of the sudden. Story after story examines how Ralph Nader could "spoil" the election for Al Gore. It's as if the Nader candidacy literally appeared out of nowhere this past Monday. CNN went so far as to devote an entire hour of the show "Talk Back Live" to the question "Is a vote for Ralph Nader a vote against Al Gore?" On the same day, CNN's Judy Woodruff repeatedly asked Nader in an interview, "It doesn't bother you that you're running may give the election to George W. Bush?" This morning, in an editorial titled Mr. Nader's Electoral Mischief, The New York Times decried Nader's campaign as a "wrecking-ball candidacy....that has become a very real danger to the Gore campaign." Can anyone recall this level of media angst about Ross Perot "spoiling" the 1992 and 1996 races for Republicans? As much as the Gore campaign might want Nader to disappear, it is not going to happen. The Democrats and the media realize Gore is teetering on the edge of the cliff and, unless he can get back in this race quickly, their ability to perpetuate the charade that this is a dead heat race becomes more and more difficult. If someone presented you with a hypothetical scenario where a two-term incumbent Vice President, two weeks before election day, was polling 42%-43% nationally, had to fight off a third-party candidate stealing 3%-6% of his base vote, and was trailing in states he should have locked up weeks ago would you say; "Yeah, that sounds like a dead heat race, boy we're going to be up late on election night?" Maybe the media will get lucky and Gore will come from behind making it the close race they keep talking about, but the comeback had better happen soon because they - and the Vice President - are running out of time. |
